Blue Candle Cactus (Myrtillocactus geometrizans)
Common Names : Bilberry Cactus, Blue Candle, Blue Flame, Blue Myrtle cactus, Garambullo, Whortleberry Cactus.
Synonyms : Cereus geometrizans, Cereus pugioniferus,
Myrtillocactus geometrizans var. pugionifera, Myrtillocactus pugionifer,
Myrtillocactus grandiareolatus
Native to : Central and northern Mexico in Oaxaca, Puebla, Tamaulipas. This species actually has formed forests in some areas of the Chihuahuan desert.
Flowers : Are small 3/4" to 1" diameter white to creamy white with light green overcast on back petals. Buds are brownish-maroon.
Fruit : The fruit is edible, small 3/4" diameter roundish dark purple berry. Blooms profusely at 3'ft. or taller. The fruit resembles the Vaccinium myrtillus aka the (Bilberry or Whortleberry) fruit as there commonly known, so both the botanical and common names were derived from this resemblance. The fruit is often sold in markets within Mexico.
